Shadow Puppets at Barnsdall Arts

shadow_puppetsOur last adventure at Barnsdall Arts Sunday took us to the mysterious and beautiful world of Balinese shadow puppets or wayang kulit. The puppets are crafted from buffalo hide and mounted on bamboo sticks. The dalang, or puppet master, is the genius behind the entire performance. He sits behind a backlit white cloth screen and narrates the story. With a traditional orchestra in the background to provide a resonant melody and its conventional rhythm, the dalang modulates his voice to create suspense thus heightening the drama. The play climaxes with the triumph of good over evil. Check out this video to get a sense of the real deal: Shadow Puppet Video

While my model was far more crude than the originals, no buffaloes were killed. Just a some trees. But look at what the kids made with just cardstock, wooden skewers, brads and masking tape!
